“Closed, But Not Abandoned”
Ongoing Responsibilities Safeguard the Site
Although the BONUS site no longer operates a reactor, PREPA and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Legacy Management (LM) collaborate on long-term surveillance and maintenance at the site. While PREPA owns the land and buildings at the site, DOE is responsible for the remaining low-level radioactive material entombed at the facility.
PREPA manages the facility by providing maintenance, security, quarterly radiological surveys, and physical inspections in compliance with the Long-Term Surveillance and Maintenance Plan between DOE and PREPA. Also responsible for coordinating visits by specialized personnel to the facility.
LM manages the BONUS site according to a site-specific long-term surveillance and maintenance plan and conducts annual radiological monitoring and performs independent inspections of the facility every 1-2 years. LM and PREPA may conduct follow-up inspections in response to new or changed conditions at the site. LM also manages active site records and responds to stakeholder inquiries. And while radiation is always present from natural and humanmade sources, workers and visitors to the BONUS site and surrounding area aren’t exposed to any measurable radiation above natural background levels.
Additionally, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has partnered with LM to complete a historical site assessment and site investigation to identify chemical, radiological, and other hazards that exist at the BONUS site, identify potential exposure to the hazards, and provide input to future site decision making.
